MA Lighting grandMA2 NPU

The MA Lighting grandMA2 NPU (Network Processing Unit) is an essential extension for the grandMA2 lighting control system, designed to significantly increase the processing power and DMX output capacity of the console. The NPU connects to the grandMA2 via the MA-Net2 protocol, allowing lighting designers and operators to expand the control system’s reach by managing a larger number of DMX universes across complex lighting setups. Used in large-scale productions like concerts, festivals, TV broadcasts, and theatrical shows, the NPU ensures smooth and reliable communication between the console and the lighting rig.

One of the primary functions of the MA Lighting grandMA2 NPU is to boost the DMX output capacity. While a standard grandMA2 console can handle a substantial number of DMX universes, the addition of an NPU allows the system to control up to 4,096 additional DMX channels (8 DMX universes per NPU). This scalability makes the NPU ideal for large productions with intricate lighting designs, where numerous fixtures need to be controlled simultaneously. For even larger setups, multiple NPUs can be linked together, effectively turning the system into a powerful and distributed network capable of managing up to 65,536 DMX channels, making it suitable for the most demanding lighting configurations.

In addition to increasing DMX output, the grandMA2 NPU also offloads processing tasks from the console, allowing the grandMA2 console to focus on user interaction, real-time control, and programming tasks. By handling the heavy lifting of DMX data distribution and processing, the NPU ensures that the lighting control system remains responsive and capable of handling complex cue stacks, effects, and transitions without lag or delay. The NPU’s internal redundancy ensures that the system continues to operate smoothly even in challenging environments, adding another layer of reliability to the setup.

The grandMA2 NPU is equipped with multiple connectivity options, making it highly versatile in terms of system integration. It features eight DMX ports, each capable of being individually configured, and supports Art-Net and sACN protocols in addition to MA-Net2. The unit also includes two gigabit Ethernet ports for fast data transmission and efficient network integration. This allows the NPU to be placed at various points within the network infrastructure, optimizing the distribution of DMX signals across large venues. The NPU is rack-mountable, making it easy to install and integrate into touring rigs or permanent installations.
