The d&b audiotechnik GSL 8 and GSL 12 are flagship line array loudspeakers within the SL-Series, designed specifically for large-scale sound reinforcement applications such as arenas, stadiums, and festivals. Introduced in 2018 after a four-year development process, these loudspeakers represent the pinnacle of d&b’s engineering, building on the legacy of the J-Series while incorporating advanced driver technology, innovative cabinet geometry, and cardioid dispersion techniques. The GSL 8 offers an 80° horizontal dispersion pattern, while the GSL 12 provides a wider 120° pattern, making them acoustically and mechanically compatible for seamless integration in various configurations. Both models are powered by the d&b D80 amplifier in a 2-way active setup, requiring just two channels—one for the low-frequency drivers and another for the passively crossed-over mid and high-frequency components—maximizing efficiency without compromising performance.

At the core of the GSL 8 and GSL 12 design is their exceptional low-frequency control and headroom, achieved through a unique driver arrangement: two forward-facing 14” neodymium LF drivers paired with two side-firing 10” neodymium LF drivers. This configuration employs cardioid techniques to enhance forward projection and minimize rearward sound spill, delivering consistent pattern control down to 45 Hz—a feat that often eliminates the need for additional subwoofers in many setups. The midrange is handled by a horn-loaded 10” driver, while three custom 1.4” exit compression drivers with 3.4” voice coils, mounted to a wave-shaping device, provide pristine high-frequency resolution. Weighing 80 kg (176 lbs) each, these loudspeakers can be flown in arrays of up to 24 units, with adjustable splay angles from 0° to 7° in 1° increments, offering flexibility and precision for large venues.

The GSL system’s deployment is streamlined by a patented rigging system supporting both tension and compression modes, allowing arrays to be flown straight from touring carts and curved into position with a hoist or winch. This, combined with d&b’s ArrayProcessing technology, ensures uniform sound distribution across vast listening areas, maintaining tonal consistency even off-axis.
